Indiana primary election polls open

INDIANAPOLIS - The polls are open in Indiana, where an expected record turnout and a surge in first-time voters are expected in a close Democratic primary race between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for the state's 72 delegates.

No early problems have been reported.

Sen. John McCain already has clinched enough delegates to win the Republican nomination. Also in Indiana, Democrats Jim Schellinger and Jill Long Thompson face off in a tight race for the nomination against incumbent Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels in November.

Only five of Indiana's nine U.S. House mebmers face challengers. The toughest races could be in the 7th District, where new Rep. Andre Carson faces seven Democratic challengers in his effort to retain the seat he won in a March special election, and in the 5th District, where Rep. Dan Burton faces possibly the strongest opponent of his 25-year career.
