A View From Indiana
PORTLAND, Ind. - As I traveled through town I did see a very zealous Clinton supporter, but overall I've been getting a vibe from a lot of Democrats that Barack Obama is the superior candidate.
Hillary Clinton's proposal for the gas-tax holiday is being described as nothing more than a Band-aid on an internally bleeding patient.
The general feeling is that America needs a solution that will actually make some mends for the economy and the nation as a whole, not just give a few dollars back to the wallets of individuals.
Also, it seems that Mr. Obama is much more interested in and focused on education here in comparison to Mrs. Clinton. He has stated that the "No Child Left Behind" Act simply does not work and needs to be changed, whereas Mrs. Clinton has barely said anything about the issue. Specifically, I've heard interest in his proposals to end standardized testing and to discourage teachers from "teaching to the test."
When it comes to international relations, in my county, the people are very patriotic and many seem to support the war in Iraq, so Mrs. Clinton's less aggressive removal may seem appealing to them.
As for health care, it seems both Democratic candidates are in favor of moving to a universal system so they both have my interest in that area.
Another big part of the economy here in Indiana is agriculture. In this area, it seems both candidates are supportive of family farmers and want to increase their ability to produce goods and make a profit from the sales of those goods.
The key issues for Indiana then, I believe, will be the war in Iraq, education and improving the economy. I guess we'll find out how the state feels later today.
