SOUTH CAROLINA’S PRIMARIES
Overview
Democrats
As John Edwards’s campaign struggles against the two better-financed candidates, he hopes to replicate his 2004 victory by capitalizing on the fact that he was born here. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton are both vying for the state’s black voters, a crucial bloc that accounted for about half of the state’s Democratic primary voters in 2004. As the race intensifies, Mr. Obama is expected to showcase one of his chief supporters, Oprah Winfrey, and Mrs. Clinton to showcase former President Bill Clinton, who remains enormously popular with black voters.
