FLORIDA’S PRIMARIES

Overview

Democrats

The Democratic National Committee voted in August to strip Florida of its delegates because the state moved its primary up to January 29. Senator Bill Nelson and Representative Alcee L. Hastings, both Florida Democrats, have sued the D.N.C. and its chairman, Howard Dean, alleging the party violated federal voting laws; the matter is in court. The Democratic presidential candidates have signed pledges not to campaign in Florida before the primary. The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, said recently that the party nominee would probably allow Democratic delegates from Florida and Michigan to be seated at next summer’s convention.

On April 5, the party’s executive committee will select 24 pledged party leaders and elected official delegates and 3 unpledged add-on delegates. On May 17, the party executive committee will select 40 at-large delegates and 11 at-large alternates. In addition, there are 22 automatic delegates including Democratic members of the United States House and Senate.
